For those who know me well, know that I’m no makeup expert. Yes, I have my favorite products & go-to looks, but it wasn’t until recently that I’ve really tried to improve my makeup skills.
Apart from reading a million blogs, I always find going to Nordstrom or Sephora and just talking with the beauty consultants can be really helpful. In addition to finding the right product, they show me the right way to apply it.
My biggest lesson: you need the right tools. I used to think that was just a marketing ploy (considering my profession…) to make consumers buy more from the brand. But let me tell you. It really does make a difference.
I have two new beauty tools I’m excited to share with you today, and you’ll see the power of makeup!
When I get out of the shower and comb my hair, this is what I look like. Not horrible, but not exactly “office ready”. And yes, Kyle took this picture SUPER close to my face, but hey this is a “transformation” post to show how effective makeup is, so a “worse” before pic always helps!
The foundation brush is full coverage brush from Bobbi Brown. The Bobbi Brown beauty consultant told me for a more natural look use a normal foundation brush, for more coverage go for the thicker, denser brush. After messing around, I prefer the full coverage brush and find it works SO MUCH BETTER than apply with my fingers! I prime with the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer (free sample!), apply foundation, and set with a powder. EASY
For eyes, that’s a trickier one I’m still working on. When I visited the Laura Mercier beauty consultant (you’ll notice I’m by no means brand loyal when it comes to cosmetics…), she politely told me there was a “better way” to apply eyeliner (thanks friends that never told me…). She showed me the flat line brush (pictured above) and their “Tightline Cake Eye Liner” in Blue Marine. It’s a beautiful navy color so it’s not so harsh as a black, but prettier than brown. You use the brush like any eyeliner brush, and the straight edge really helps keep the tight line.
Of course, no eye makeup is complete without good mascara – my favorite is Benefit “They’re Real!”.
I add a little blush (and lipgloss AFTER breakfast); I’m that simple. And, voila! This is a look easy for the office (I’m not trying TOO hard…), but clearly better than my before photo.
Now this looks like I won’t fall asleep at work!
To pump it up to go out after work, I’d put on a bright lip & some darker eye shadow and call it a day! My style is simple, easy, and pretty much fool proof!
I’m always in search of new tools, tips & tricks! What’s your favorite beauty tool or makeup trick?
