The Inaugural Book Club Meeting (which reminded us of Babysitter’s Club & was almost renamed to Food Club) took place at my apartment last night, and it was so much fun!!
Our book this month was “Looking for Alaska” by John Green. For anyone who’s read “The Fault in Our Stars”, you’ll probably agree with me that “Looking for Alaska” does not quite measure up. Regardless, it’s an easy read about teenage love, angst, and rebellion (which always makes for a great book club read). AND, the back of the book provided questions to use at a book club which was PERFECT given I’m not an English teacher or professional book club facilitator – so if you want to plan your own book club, I recommend finding a book with questions already provided!
For the party, I decided to center it around the Primetime Emmy Awards. I stuck to small plates for the food since our apartment is pretty small and we didn’t have enough table space for big plates. It allowed people to graze and mingle, and avoided the inevitable discomfort of someone being allergic or hating whatever main dish I was bound to come up with.
To stick to the theme, I bought some movie candy for $1 at Walmart, popcorn holders with different flavored popcorn (Garlic & Sea Salt, Kettlecorn, Regular), and sprinkled the table with gold confetti to give it a more “glamorous” look & feel.
I wanted to keep people entertained, but didn’t necessarily want to play any games. This was a crowd where not everyone knew each other, so I wanted to facilitate conversation without forcing it. Best idea?? Emmy ballots! I printed them off from the Huffington Post, and it got people talking about TV shows, actors & actresses, movies, all the latest celebrity gossip, and more.
All-in-all, it was SO fun to host my friends and spend a Monday evening watching the Emmy’s & chatting about our book. We’ve already planned the September read – This is Where I Leave You by Jonathon Tropper and the plan is for our next book club to be dinner & then see the movie!
