While shopping at Meijer this past week, I saw the Cold Brew section continue to expand and felt compelled to give it a try! If you’re not a coffee fan, or familiar with the cold brew brewing method, I think it’s worth keeping an open mind…
To make Cold Brew you can use a Toddy which steeps the beans to make a coffee concentrate. The whole rave about cold brew is that it is designed to make coffee 67% less acidic (according to the Toddy description…) and the concentrate is good for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator! Once you have your concentrate you just add hot or cold water to make your coffee/latte. Blue Bottle Coffee has a good step by step method on creating cold brew, but they are making a much larger quantity than I would make!
If you don’t want to go to the trouble of making it yourself, you can find some good cold brew options at the grocery store. The brand I tried was called Prospector’s Cold Brew – Almond Milk Coffee. I was a little confused that it was “ready to drink” since I knew that cold brew was a concentrate. The last thing I wanted to do was drink a concentrate, but the bottle assured me it was made with Almond Milk and ready to go!
Since it was already in the refrigerator section, I decided my only option was to make an iced drink out of it. It was really good! Even Kyle, a “non coffee drinker”, enjoyed it. You can tell it was less acidic than normal coffee, and the almond milk offered up the right amount of sweetness. It was the perfect serving size and different than my usual go to. After looking on Prospector’s website, it sounds like they also sell their concentrates if you wanted something that would last longer and give more flexibility.
Have you ever made cold brew at home? Do you order it from a coffee shop??
