2017 – The Year of Health

As I reflected on 2016, it became very obvious that a core focus for 2017 needed to be my health. Not just in the physical sense of eating well & working out, but mentally & spiritually as well. Having an almost 18-month old baby has really transformed who I am and who I want to be, and with that I never really took the time to just sit down and process my feelings. I realized 2016 will likely go down in the record books as one of my most “unhealthy” years. From a lack of working out, to yo-yo dieting, to a separation from my spiritual/mental well being, and everything in between – 2016 was not my proudest year for me as a person.

While I focused most of my energy on our little man, by not focusing on myself I can look back now and see that I’ve really let myself go. And when I ask myself some basic questions: Am I good mom? Am I living the life I want to live? Am I spending my time in the most productive way? Am I a good friend, neighbor, wife? I can’t say I’m 100% confident all of those answers are an adamant YES!

It’s easy, once you become a mom, to stop the self-reflection and be caught up in the whirlwind of the everyday. I’ve felt compelled over the past few days to really stop & assess where I’m at and wanting to go with my life. Instead of focusing on everything that “went wrong” in 2016, I’d like to just admit there’s room for an improvement and start looking at the path forward.

New Year’s Resolutions for 2017: The Year of Health  

Prioritize dedicated “me” time for meditationEver use the Calm app? There is a free version that offers guided meditation, and I must say it’s the best thing ever. I cannot seem to stop my mind from going 100mph and this app really helps me unwind & focus. My goal for 2017 is to spend 10 minutes a day meditating. Ideally, this will be something I do before bed each night & having an app like “Calm” or “Headspace” makes it pretty easy to complete!

Commit to exercise & maintaining a healthy body weight. I have started the Bikini Body Guide and hope this can be a great “jump start” to achieving this goal. While a “bikini body” isn’t exactly the goal, I love that this program offers easy, 30 minute workouts you can complete at home. Since having Aidan and starting a new job, it’s been easy to find an excuse to not go to a workout class. Adding insult to injury (literally), I hurt my Achilles late this summer that has basically taken me out of the game when it comes to running – my old, stand by for staying fit. Luckily, Kyle is excited to get “bikini body” ready, too, so having some accountability with each other will really help!!  You can find lots of workout guides/diet plans (I’m just doing workouts) on Pinterest.

Complete at least 4 Devotionals. I’ve started “Missional Motherhood” by Gloria Furman (it’s only $10) and recommend for any moms out there – whether your kid is just turning 1 or 18! I will also be starting another devotional in the new year with my mother-in-law & sister-in-law. I’ve found that by getting out of bed just a little earlier each morning, I can find the 15 minutes to really sit and dive into the Word.

Build deeper connections in the community. Through friendships, volunteering, work, and my neighborhood – I want to focus on building relationships in 2017. We moved back home to Indianapolis in April of 2016, and finally feel like we are settling in. While winter makes it really tough to get out there, I know I need to find ways to stay involved & engaged. I want to host monthly dinners, get involved in the community through volunteering, and increase my network to name a few.

Utilize my Day Designer to its fullest. Guys – this is seriously THE BEST planner out there (and my sister-in-law happens to know the woman who owns it!). The first few pages lets you set the tone for the year – with goals around money, work, life, food, travel and breaks it down from yearly goals to monthly goals, weekly goals, and finally – what does your ideal DAY look like. It’s definitely bulky, but well worth the investment in my opinion. I was in a good habit at the beginning of last year writing down my goals for the day, but that quickly fell off as we moved to Indy and I started my new job. I’m anxious to set 2017 off on a good note and maintain through the year! It’s the best way to make sure you really prioritize what you want to accomplish that day so my above 4 goals can be achieved!
