One of our favorite restaurant chains in Indianapolis, Patachou, recently opened a chic bar, Bar One Fourteen. This tiny restaurant only seats 16 people, and is only open 3 nights a week. Immediately when we walked into the restaurant, I couldn’t see anything. Literally, I couldn’t see a thing. It was pitch black with think velvet curtains covering all windows. I was getting a little nervous this was going to be one of those weird eating experiments where you can’t actually see the food…the host assured us that our eyes would adjust and lo & behold about 5 minutes in, we could start to make out objects in the room.
We chose an earlier reservation and were the only 2 people there for a little bit. What I love about a small space is the ability to really interact with the waiter and staff. Our waiter recommended a really good beer for Kyle (that we ended up buying at the liquor store after!) and I got a champagne cocktail (oh those summer days…).
We decided to be adventurous and get a tomato salad to share – it was Indiana heirloom tomatoes, peaches, walnut milk, marigold & basil. You may know almond milk & coconut milk, but have you heard of walnut milk??? It is a pretty thick, creamy, savory milk which paired well with the sweet tomatoes & peaches.
We decided to split the “Fancy AF” burger complete with shaved black truffles (truffles are extra). I’m not exaggerating when I say this was one of the best burgers I’ve tried. And let me tell you, we’ve eaten some of the best burgers…The burger at Bar One Fourteen is just so juicy and melts in your mouth. At $28 you’d expect an amazing burger, and I’m glad it did not disappoint!
After dinner we stopped by Napolese (also owned by the Patachou family) for an affogato (our favorite!) and another round of cocktails. Bar One Fourteen has a limited dessert offering, and I’m sure it was amazing, but we just can’t pass up an affogato! It was a beautiful summer night – remember how the sun used to stay up well into the evening? Yeah…me, too. It was a perfect way to end the evening!
